Main Bhi Cockroach.

Three words. 18.5 million Indians put it in their bio in under a week. Here's why it worked.

What it means, literally

"Main Bhi Cockroach" is a Hindi-English code-switched phrase that translates roughly as "I, Too, Am a Cockroach" or "I'm Also a Cockroach." In standard Hindi it would be either "मैं भी कॉकरोच हूँ" (Main bhi cockroach hoon) or fully translated "मैं भी तिलचट्टा हूँ" (Main bhi tilchatta hoon). But neither has the punch of the English-mixed version.

It emerged organically on the night of May 15, 2026 — hours after CJI Surya Kant referred to unemployed Indian youth as "cockroaches" and "parasites of society" during a Supreme Court hearing. By the morning of May 16, it was trending on Indian Instagram. By the end of that week, it had crossed an estimated 50 million impressions and was being printed on cardboard signs at protests in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Pune.

Why this exact phrasing works

Indian slogans tend to either go fully Hindi/regional or fully English. "Main Bhi Cockroach" deliberately doesn't — and that's the genius.

  • "Main Bhi" is universally understood across India's Hindi belt and recognized everywhere else. It's intimate, first-person, and not aggressive.
  • "Cockroach" stays in English because that's how CJI Surya Kant said it. Keeping the original word preserves the source of the insult — it makes the reclamation explicit.
  • The code-switch itself is how young urban India actually talks. It's not anyone's "national language" or "international language." It's the third language Gen Z India invented for itself.

The structural genius: it's an identity claim, not an argument

Notice what the slogan doesn't do. It doesn't argue that the CJI was wrong. It doesn't list statistics about unemployment. It doesn't demand policy changes. It just says "yes — me too."

This is rhetorically devastating because:

  1. Arguments invite counter-arguments. Identity claims don't.
  2. You can't refute someone's self-identification. If 18 million people say they're cockroaches, they are.
  3. The slogan does the political work without needing a political platform. Anyone can join in 0 seconds.

Comparable slogans in history: "I Am Sparta," "Je Suis Charlie," "Black Lives Matter," "Yes We Can." All identity-first, argument-second. Main Bhi Cockroach fits the lineage.

Why the cockroach specifically

Of all the dismissive words the CJI could have used — "loser," "useless," "parasite" alone — "cockroach" turned out to be uniquely re-claimable. Three reasons:

  1. Survival metaphor. Cockroaches outlived dinosaurs. They survive radiation. They thrive in conditions hostile to everything else. Calling someone a cockroach is a backhanded compliment if you flip the angle by 180°.
  2. Collective behavior. Cockroaches are never seen alone. Where there's one, there are thousands. The metaphor implicitly says: "there are more of us than you think."
  3. Disgusts the establishment. Cockroaches are coded as gross. Wearing the identity = signaling "I don't care what respectable people think." That's the entire Gen Z ethos.

The slogan in the wild

Within 48 hours of the CJI's remarks, "Main Bhi Cockroach" was:

  • Trending #1 on Indian Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit
  • In bios of an estimated 11 million Instagram accounts
  • Printed on cardboard signs at small protests outside the Supreme Court
  • The subject of a sketch on Indian late-night show The Wire's Cuts
  • Referenced by Mahua Moitra (TMC MP) and Kirti Azad in their support posts

The slogan's future

Slogans peak. Most viral phrases burn bright for 2-3 weeks and fade. The test for "Main Bhi Cockroach" is whether it survives the news cycle into June 2026 and beyond.

Our bet: it will. Because unlike most political slogans, this one doesn't depend on a specific election, candidate, or policy debate. It's an identity. And identities — once claimed — tend to stick around.

Wear the word they used against us.
